HAS JACK HYLE BEEN RESURRECTED?

                                                                               By:  Rex Duff

The Bible states in Galatians 1:6-9, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from  heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed”.

Recently, I was shown a tract from Clays Mill Road Baptist Church, located in Lexington, Ky. Its Pastor is Jeffrey Fugate, and its current average attendance, according to witnesses, is 1500 people. This group also, now has a Bible College.

This tract has the Church name printed on it and the Pastor’s name, and therefore, one would agree, must be endorsed by this so called, “Church”.

A little background probably here, is very helpful.

In my first year at Seminary, at an Independent Baptist College, I met Jack Hyles. I also meet Dave Hyles at this same Seminary. I visited Hyles Anderson College, only one time, to hear Lester Roloff, and David Gibbs Sr.  While in Seminary, I also went through the Lordship Salvation Controversy.

However, most Christians know only of both Hyles, dealing with Moral problems.

Many books have been written on the subject, and the whole area is unpleasant, and will not be discussed further.

The problem is, that Jack Hyles wrote a book entitled, “Salvation is More Than Being Saved”. It was copyrighted in 1985, by Hyles-Anderson Publishers and  was endorsed by the Sword of the Lord, an Independent Baptist Magazine.  This created a vicious attack between Jerry Falwell and the late Curtis Hutson. The book’s teachings, are still very much with us, and therefore must be examined!

A few quotes from the book, by the late Jack Hyles, are very important.

Page 20, “Now there are many Christians who are saved, but not converted”.

Page 21, “At salvation, conversion is supposed to begin”.

Page 22, “As soon as we win someone to Christ, we are to convert them”.

Page 24, “This means there are degrees of conversion”.

Page 61, “There are two salvations – the salvation of the soul and the salvation of the life. The word “salvation” means “salvaging”.  The first is regeneration, the second is conversion.”

In an old book entitled, “What Baptist Believe and Why They Believe it,”  by J.G. Bow, the following is stated.

Page 11 and 12, “Baptists believe, not only in the importance, but the absolute necessity of repentance.”  Repentance means “a change of Mind,”  It involves     1) a consciousness of guilt  2) Sorrow for sin    and   3) a turning from sin.”

The New Hampshire Confession of Faith, written in 1832 states,

“VIII of  Repentance and Faith – We believe that Repentance and Faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God;  whereby, being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King, and relying on Him alone as the only and all sufficient Savior”.

The Southside Missionary Baptist Fellowship stated in IIg,

“1.  Repentance must come to lost man   Luke 24:47

2.      Repentance is

              A.  Turning around   Acts 26:20

B.      A Change of Mind  -  taking up side with God against yourself

C.      A  Change of attitude in your heart

3.      God commands repentance – Acts 17:30

4.       The Thessalonians are an example  I Thess.  1:9.”

When viewing these few brief statements, it is clear that Jack Hyles was completely opposite, from the Historic position of Baptist on Repentance.

Further,  Jack Hyles in the same book on page 70 stated, “Now exactly what is Lordship salvation?  It is a doctrine embraced by some. They say that one must receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord to be saved. This doctrine is really nothing more but salvation by works.  They teach heresy.”

Hyles goes on to state on page 73 and 74, “some observations about Lordship salvation.

  1. It is salvation by works.
  2. If one must accept Christ as Lord of his life in order to be saved, it would of necessity remove growth in grace.
  3. Lordship salvation necessitates the doctrine of losing one’s salvation.
  4. Lordship salvation makes no provision for the carnal Christian.
  5. Lordship salvation removes grace.
  6. Salvation is receiving, not giving.
  7. Lordship salvation would make salvation a trade or a deal (or) maybe even a bribe.”

Jack Hyles later used the word Repentance in Salvation tracts, but would define Repentance -  as knowing you are a sinner, and nothing  more!

For years this was known as easy beliefism vrs. Commitment (Lordship) Salvation.

Why than, is all this history important, because history repeats itself.

The Clays Mill Road Baptist Church tract, is nothing more than a Resurrected Jack Hyles tract. If this tract is followed, it will lead many lost souls  to  Hell.  This is a very serious matter!

This tract, is in fact, another Gospel, like the Apostle Paul spoke about in

 Galatians 1: 6-9.

Those false teachers, like Fugate, who promote Easy Beliefism, always want to say, “you need to take Christ as Savior”, and never mention as Lord.

Some false teachers have gotten quite clever however, they will use the term “Lord and Savior”, but what they mean by this is God and Savior.  There is still no commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Has Jack Hyles been Resurrected?  In case in point, his doctrine has never died, nor shall it, until Christ returns.

A few Scriptures are important to remember before we examine this tract from Clays Mill Baptist Church.

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus states, “Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

In Luke 13:5, Jesus stated, “But except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish.”

The Bible states also in 2 Corinthians 8:10, “For  godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation.”

It is true that the Bible in James 5:19-20 and Luke 22:31-32, uses the word converted in relationship to someone who is already saved. However, in checking with any Greek Lexicon on both of these places, the word converted means to return.  It is a completely different word than the word usually translated converted.

Unless you are a (Divorced and Remarried Ruckmanite) preacher, you cannot change the meaning of words.

The word believe (for you Ruckmanites) is translated commit in John 2:24, in the King James Version!  If someone reads John 2:23 with John 2:24, it might get easy beliefism out of them.

Remember James 2:19, “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils (demons) also believe and tremble.”

Is the devil and all of his demons, going to heaven?  Think about this question as we review  this tract.

Here now is the complete tract of Clays Mill Road Baptist Church. Nothing has been left out or added to it!

“ There are basically four things you need to know  from the Bible to have the assurance that when You die You will go to Heaven.”

Comments- Notice the word know. In the second column further in this tract, the word know  is substituted with the word believe.

Thus this tract states believe means to know, and to know means to believe.

Does the devil  and all demons know these four things?

Does everyone in Hell know (or even believe) these 4 things?

Why didn’t Jesus just tell the Rich young ruler in  Luke 18:18-27, that he just needed to

know 4 things?

Has Fugate,  and the Clays Mill Road Baptist Church, found a way to get souls to Heaven, better than the Lord himself?

Their tract further –

I. Everyone is a Sinner

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

The reason that we “come short” of God’s glory (God’s righteous or perfect nature) is because “all have sinned”.

“All” includes me and it also includes you.

First of all you must agree with the Bible and admit you are a sinner.

Comments- Notice this tract says first, you must agree you are a sinner.

Is this where salvation starts? Answer- NO!

What does this tract leave out?  ANSWER -  The drawing of God! (John 12:32-33)

This tract further leaves out, the conviction about sin, from God.  (John 16:8-9)

Is there anywhere in this tract where sin is defined?  See for example Exodus 20

Their tract further-

II Everyone owes a sin –Debt

Romans 6:23A  For the wages (penalty or debt) of sin is death.

This is speaking of eternal death which is called “the second death”.

Revelation  20:14  And death and Hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Secondly you must realize that if you die in your sins, then you must pay the penalty for sin by dying in Hell—forever.

Comments - This part of the tract, is partially true (a half truth).  Why?

No one has to worry about the second death, until they reach accountability!

Notice what King David says about his child who died as a baby. (2 Sam. 12:22-23)

Also, everyone, whether saved or lost, does die (physical death) because of inherited sin from Adam.  This is how there are miscarriages. This is how babies die. They did not die from any sin they committed.  You only are judged (face Hell) for sin when you reach accountability. A child must reach the place of reasoning.  It is different with each child.

It may not happen until a child reaches ten or twelve. It certainly does not happen as 3, 4, or 5 years old!

Their tract further-

III   Everyone’s Sin-Debt Has Been Paid

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Although sin brings eternal death, God wants to give us eternal life.

Notice: “Eternal Life” is:

1.Not through going to church

2. Not through being baptized

3. Not through being a good person, but is “through Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:8

But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The third thing you must believe is that Jesus has paid the wages of sin by dying for you, and eternal life is only through Him.

Comments- Once again, as in point 2, all sin does not bring eternal death, only acquired sin brings Hell, if one is not converted!

Their tract further-

IV  Everyone Can Be Saved

Although Jesus died to pay everyone’s sin debt, not every one is on their way to Heaven. You must personally receive God’s Gift of eternal life. You must believe what Jesus has done for you, and ask Him to save you.

Romans 10:9

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:13

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

If you would like to trust Jesus Christ as Savior, simply bow your head right now and humbly:

  1. Admit to God that you are a sinner.
  2. Tell Him you believe Jesus died for you.
  3. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins and save your soul.
  4. Then believe that He promised to save you.

I John 5:13

These things have been I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW ye have eternal life.

John 10:28

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 5:24

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Comments-  Notice again what point 4 states:

You must believe and trust Christ as Savior

Admit being a sinner, believe Jesus died for you

Ask him to forgive you and save you.

Could the devil be saved, if he asked to be?  Could someone who has rejected God so long, that the Holy Spirit no longer deals with them, be saved?

Could anyone presently in Hell be saved? (According to this tract)

ANSWER – The Bible states in Hebrews 9:27 – NO!

What is the major problem with this tract?

Where in the Bible does it say to believe in Christ as Savior to be saved?

What does the word believe really mean? As already stated, John 2:24 translates believe as commit.  There in lies the real problem. There is no commitment in this tract. (No Bible Repentance)

Where in this tract is the word Faith found?   (Eph. 2:8-9)  Faith is not in this tract!

Jesus must be taken as Lord , not Savior, to be saved.  (Rom 10:9) –sited in tract.

Without Biblical Repentance, there is no Salvation.

Luke 13:3,5;  Acts 3:19; Matt 3:2; Matt 4:17.

Why does this tract spend so much space, (nearly ¼ of it) on trying to convince easy belief professors, they are saved.

Why is not Matthew 16:24-25 in this tract.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

The answer is pretty clear. This Scripture deals with Salvation .  One must surrender their life to Christ.  He must be their personal Lord.

In conclusion, what is wrong with this tract?

This tract, just like when the devil quoted Scripture to the Lord Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11).  It is a perversion of the Gospel. This tract if truly followed, will give us Laodicea lost believers, headed for Hell (Rev 3:14-22)

Therefore, surrender yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ, as your prophet, priest and King, and receive true salvation when Holy Ghost conviction comes upon you.
